Delta Airline Pet Policies!!!?
Okay, I have a Shetland Sheepdog (Sheltie) and I need to know Delta Requirments. I've called the airline and the employee was no help. I am traveling first class so the seats will be bigger. I need to know how big the carrier can be, about sedating my dog (yes or no), what happens if your dog can not fit under the seat infront of you, and anything else you can tell me. Please help, my trip is coming up very soon!!!

In my experience: Use a soft sided Sherpa bag (You can get them at Petco/PetSmart) and bring the dog on as a carryon. Checking the dog as baggage or as cargo has some risks.
Edit: Whether the dog is able to be a carryon depends on its size. The Reservations people should be able to give you the maximum dimensions of the space. (In my experience, if the dog fits in a Sherpa bag *airline safe one of course* it is workable- I’ve traveled with pups as carryons).
Your dog will have to ride in Cargo. You will need a health certificate from the vet with in 10 days of the flight. You will need a letter of acclimation for the lowest temperature your dog can with stand. Most vets will put 35 degree’s. You will need a crate that is airline approved and big enough for the dog to stand up, turn around and lay down.
It is very unlikely that your dog will be allowed to ride in the cabin with you.
You need to call Delta Pets phone number which can be found on the Delta website.
All of the rules are also posted there.
Any dog I have ever flown in the cabin has had to fit under the seat in front of you in the cabin and has not been allowed out of the carrier on board the flight. I have flown first class, bussiness class and coach.
Here are Delta’s restrictions for pets. Even first class he has to go under the seat in front of you or he can;t be carry on.

Also be aware that only 1 pet is allowed in first class and business class. 2 in the main cabin. That means if someone shows up with a pet before you do you will not be allowed to have him as carry on. You should call in advance to make sure your little one can fly in the cabin with you and make your reservation. I’m thinking a Sheltie is going to be too big to be carry on though unless it’s just a pup. It’s normally only toy breeds that are small enough to be carry on’s unless they are pups. Pets are not allowed in the cabin on flights to Hawaii.
Speak to your vet about sedaing him when you get your health certificate. He knows your dog better than anyone. My vet never advised it for my dogs.
I was going to fly my dog in Cargo on Delta airlines to an agility trial in Fla. and for him to fly in cargo it was going to be $600.00. Outrageously overpriced. The bigger the knennel the more money.Needless to say he isnt flying.
